To be discerning is to be able to tell things apart to separate them, even when they appear to be very similar. People who are discerning are able to make keen observations about things. Discerning the body probably means paying attention to the needs of others as much as to one’s own needs. The body is the body of Christ, and anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
